A collaboration of talent performing blues, traditional and original tunes. This project sprouted from Joe’s Rhythm & Chording class/friends at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, and hints at the harmonica bands of the past BUT had much more emphasis on American roots music and vocals.
The project included members of all playing levels and abilities and has taken Chicago area stages at the Old Town School, the Hideout, the Harlem Avenue Lounge in Berwyn, Illinois, and was the opening act at the Paramount Blues Festival in Grafton, Wisconsin.

Imagine a concert where you could experience blues harmonica playing and it’s most important players from its earliest recorded inception all the way up to today’s innovative harp blowers . . . the History of the Blues Harmonica Concert did just that! One of the best possible live concert recordings that has more blues harmonica history than you can imagine packed into 2 CD’s! A work with David Barrett, Dennis Gruenling, and Kinya Pollard. Joe practiced the pre-war medleys for years before this concert was recorded.
Consulted on "What Did You Hear? The Music of Bob Dylan" by Steven Rings. Joe was honored to consult on the subject of harmonica in the book (2025).
Included in the book "Amazing Grace" by Mikael Bachman in his chapter where he draws on "performances by three leading players, Joe Filisko, Buddy Greene, and Howard Levy, revealing how the combination of bending and playing in different positions has enabled multiple different explorations of the tune."( 2025)
Contributor for Routledge "Encyclopedia of the Blues" by Edward Komara; Joe authored the “Blues Harmonica” entry for the Routledge 2-Volume book set (2005).
Documentaries that featured Mr. Filisko include: “Harmonica Summit: Imagination is Limitless,” “Tin Sandwich,” and “In the Reeds” and "Pocketful of Soul" both by Marc Lempert.
